As the countdown to Ondo State gubernatorial election draw closer and the happenings within the giant political party get more interesting as there's vicious crack in the camps of both the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
But the happenstances as shown a brighter chances for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) flag bearer; Dr. Olu Agunloye, who has an opportunity to reach out to the traditionally radical Ondo people who usually vote against prevailing politicians. Outgoing Governor Mimiko won twice on this perspective.
The PDP has two popular factions; one ledby Mimiko, while the other is led by Jimoh Ibrahim. Popular sentiments show that Mimiko is not so popular with the Ondo radical masses having owing workers months of salaries and scored badly on employment creation.
Mimiko's weakness should be the advantage for APC but the party is battling with a crises that may make it loose sympathy with the critical mass. Recall that the imposition of Akeredolu as gubernatorial flagbearer in 2011 made the party to loose, coming distant third. Asiwaju Tinubu is said to have endorsed Segun Abraham, his close associate, who is
really not popular in the state and is not known to have been an exceptional achiever.
Agunloye is an experienced politician whose pedigree is well articulated and respected. He has a chance to present himself as a clear alternative now if his manifestos are appealing and can be trusted. The Ondo political consciousness is popularly known not to respect godfathers like Tinubu and Obasanjo but an independent fighter like Agunloye could win the heart of the Ondo masses, just like Mimiko's.
Olu Agunloye is the former Minister of Power and Steel and former Minister of State for Defence (Navy) and has previously been a member of the People's Democratic Party and the Action Congress of Nigeria.
The Akoko born, governorship candidate belongs to the league of influential and crowd pulling politicians in the Sunshine State, Ondo and his influence could be said to have worked for him when he was made a federal minister ahead of several interested and eligible politicians in the state at the time he was made one.
